2. Shapes and categories of prayer wheels

The prayer wheels can be divided into the practice wheel, the protection wheel, the destruction wheel, the killing wheel, the reincarnation wheel, the chopping wheel, the launching wheel, the auspicious wheel, the longevity wheel, the wheel of letting luck and success, increasing the mind and killing all undertakings, and the turning prayer wheel. There are ten prayer wheels in total. A sort of. There are five types of prayer wheels: water prayer wheel, wind prayer wheel, fire prayer wheel, earth prayer wheel and hand prayer wheel. The prayer wheel is blown by the power of the wind, and the wind that touches the prayer wheel is empowered by the blessing of the prayer wheel. Therefore, it can purify the negative karma and obstacles of any sentient being touched by the wind, and the wind blows everywhere. All sentient beings can achieve Buddhahood.

 

4. Water prayer wheel

Prayer wheels are rotated by the power of water flow. They are often found along rivers and streams. The water that touches the prayer wheels will be blessed. All aquatic species in the place where the water flows or sentient beings who drink the water can benefit and achieve Buddhahood. .

 

5. Earth Prayer Wheel

When the prayer wheel placed on the ground is turned, all sentient beings who live in that land or are touched by the dust will achieve Buddhahood.

In short, all sentient beings who move, see, hear or think about the prayer wheel will form a connection with the Dharma and receive benefits.

"Heaven and Earth's Infallible Series" records the precautions when making a prayer wheel: the mantras can be written in gold, silver, red, black and other colors. The writing must be error-free and continuous, and an iron rod is used as the axis. The heart, the upper and lower seals are made of sandalwood, the scriptures cannot be turned upside down, the prayer wheel is wrapped with cloth, and the prayer wheel is made according to the method.

 

The scriptures in prayer wheels are traditionally printed on woodblocks or hand-copied. When rolling up the paper with scriptures or mantras printed on it and putting it into the prayer wheel, it should be appropriately tight and should not be rolled too loosely or too tightly. The central axis in the prayer wheel is generally made of sandalwood or cypress. Prayer wheels made with sandalwood as the central axis correspond to the "ending of disasters" among the four causes, and are especially helpful in eliminating disasters, diseases and obstacles; The prayer wheel with cypress wood as the central axis has various benefits related to the cause of the Ministry of Love. The prayer wheel itself is made of pure gold, followed by pure silver, copper, and iron.

The "Great Water Wind Wheel Tantra" also contains relevant records about the material of the prayer wheel: the main shaft of the prayer wheel is made of bodhi wood, which helps to generate bodhicitta on its own. The axis is made of iron, symbolizing that the yogi's life is as solid as iron. Om mani bei me hum is used as the fundamental mantra, the seed character should face outward, and the sutra should be wrapped with the word hum at the beginning and the word hum at the end, so as to use this merit to increase the wealth and blessings. The top of the prayer wheel not only represents the name of Sambhogakaya Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, but also represents the dual destiny of the two truths; the bottom of the prayer wheel represents the incarnation, symbolizing the cause of spreading the Dharma and benefiting living beings.

A person who usually spins a precious prayer wheel with secret mantras in his hand is equivalent to meditating on the three roots of the guru, the deity, and the dakini at the same time, and reciting all the mantras. It includes the treasury of sutras and teachings, the essence of the four elements, the longevity and merit of all sentient beings in the three realms, and the quintessence of merit. If you practice any method, you will receive great blessings, achieve rapid results, and have a broad career.

 

3. History and inheritance of prayer wheels

According to legend, the method of turning the prayer wheel was first obtained by Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva who asked Nagarjuna Bodhisattva to go to the Dragon Palace. Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva told Nagarjuna Bodhisattva: "There is a prayer wheel in the Dragon Palace. As long as any sentient being sees, hears, thinks about, or touches it, he can be relieved from suffering and increase his merits. If you can bring this prayer wheel with you, If you go back to the south and look at the continent, you can benefit countless sentient beings."

So Nagarjuna Bodhisattva went to the Dragon Palace with his supernatural power, told the Dragon King what Guanyin Bodhisattva said, and asked the Dragon King to give this precious prayer wheel to benefit all living beings.

The Dragon King replied: "We do have a prayer wheel here. A long time ago, there was a serious famine here. At that time, the Buddha of Lighting the Damp mercifully gave this sutra, which brings blessings to all who see, hear and remember it. The sutra wheel was given to us, solved our disasters, and brought supreme peace and happiness to our dragon clan. I give it to you, hoping that you can use it for the sake of Buddhism and all living beings." So, the Dragon King gave the sutra wheel to the dragon. The tree Bodhisattva, Nagarjuna Bodhisattva brought it to Nanzhanbuzhou, and many sentient beings benefited from it. The text contained in this prayer wheel is the content of the great vow that Guanyin made to all the Buddhas in the ten directions when he first aroused his great ambition.

After that, various teachings on the prayer wheel were passed down from the Patriarch Nagarjuna to the lion-faced Dakini; the lion-faced Dakini passed it on to the great siddha Tilopa; Tilopa passed it on to the great master Naropa; Loba passed it on to the great translator Marpa, who then passed it on to Milarepa, the Lord of Yogis. Milarepa passed it on to the incomparable Gampopa, and then to the first Karmapa Dusum Khyenpa. It was passed down from generation to generation and spread to all corners of Tibet. When ordinary people recite mantras or Buddha's names, even if they have any mistakes such as delusions, delusions, anger, or forgetting to dedicate, the various merits of spinning the prayer wheel will not be damaged. Benefit.

Another theory is that the method of turning the prayer wheel was taught to the lion-faced Dakini by the five Buddhas. The lion-faced Dakini passed it on to Nagarjuna. When Nagarjuna borrowed wind power to turn the prayer wheel on the roof of his retreat, At that time, in concentration, I saw the infinite incarnations of the guru, the deity, and Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva blessing me. Later, he asked the benefactor Qiu Jijiabu to turn the Dharma wheel (Ganyur). The great sage Marpa also inherited this method and organized it.

There is also a prayer wheel in Han Dynasty, which is called Zhuanlunzang. According to legend, it was invented by Fu Xi (497-569), a layman in the Liang Dynasty of the Southern Dynasties.

According to the Record of Pagoda Temple in Volume 3 of "Shimen Zhengtong": "In the early Liang Dynasty, the good and wise masters were sorry for the common people, although they knew a lot about this way. However, in the life-saving magic weapon, some men and women were born illiterate, or For those who are literate but have no time to read because of other reasons, the great masters specially devised conveniences for this reason and created a wheel-turning treasury, so that those who have faith can push a turn, which will have the same effect as reading. Therefore, he swore to himself: Those who take the oath to hide their bodies, live without losing their human body, and can turn around without counting, the merits they gain are the same as reciting sutras."

 

4. Things to note and clarification of concepts when turning the prayer wheel

1. The direction of rotation must be correct

When turning the prayer wheel, you must turn it in a clockwise direction (turning it counterclockwise is the Bon tradition in Tibet). Turning clockwise is a right-hand turn, also known as an auspicious turn. Back then, someone once asked the Buddha, what should we do if the blind, deaf, etc. cannot read and recite Buddhist scriptures? The Buddha said that after rolling this sutra into a circle and turning it right-hand, the merits will be the same as reading and reciting it.

When turning the prayer wheels, some people will deliberately turn them quickly and violently, hoping to make the prayer wheels spin faster and longer. In fact, this is inappropriate. Just apply appropriate force to make the prayer wheels rotate stably.

 

3. The merits of turning mantras with hands are the same as chanting mantras orally.

Reciting sutras and mantras orally is a very good way to practice, and turning the prayer wheel with your hands is also a practice based on the same motivation. Even if a prayer wheel is rotated by wind, water, heat, or electricity, it must be built with the intention of practicing and benefiting sentient beings. These are all manifestations of compassion and practice, and they can also be used to benefit sentient beings. Those who bring benefits to themselves also have immeasurable merit.

The merits are inconceivable and cannot be exhausted. , everything in this world will go well, auspiciousness will be perfect, and all the Buddhas of the ten directions and countless dragons and heavenly protectors will always protect you. The five uninterrupted sins and the ten evil karma can be eliminated."

If the prayer wheel is turned with the power of fire, all living beings can be liberated wherever the smoke is blown. If it is placed in rivers or ponds, all living beings can be liberated." If a prayer wheel is turned by water power in places such as rivers, streams, etc., fish, shrimps, and crabs can all be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss... If you have the three bodies and five wisdoms, you will be able to achieve the state of Bodhi.

Practitioners with sufficient diligence will realize that when the prayer wheel rotates, the determination of the tenth level will be certain, and the countless sins and karma created since the beginning can be purified in an instant. The deity or deity can achieve perfection by practicing any of them. Even if you are not diligent yourself, you can avoid faults and perfect your merits by letting others write the merits of the prayer wheel. After human beings fall into hell and are blown to hell by the wind of a prayer wheel, all sentient beings in hell can be liberated. This is the teaching of the Buddha. In general, although many sins and fundamental sins have not been eliminated through diligent repentance, the merits of turning the prayer wheel can also eliminate sins and obtain liberation.

1. Amitabha Buddha said: Anyone who recites Guanyin Bodhisattva's six-character Great Ming Mantra while turning the Dharma Wheel will be as lucky as a thousand Buddhas.

 

2. Shakyamuni Buddha said: Turning the prayer wheel once is better than being in seclusion for one, seven or nine years.

Sakyamuni Buddha said: Due to the power of this prayer wheel, all good gods protect, save, and relieve all untimely death and pain, and no one can compare with children, wealth, enjoyment, food, clothing, slaves, etc. If there is no good deed done by body or speech, it is more powerful than this prayer wheel.

 

4. Guru Padmasambhava said: Among the Buddhist dharma translated from India into Tibetan, there is no greater meritorious deed done by body or speech than turning the six-syllable mantra prayer wheel.

Padmasambhava said: Those who diligently recite mantras and turn prayer wheels will undoubtedly achieve the fruition status of the tenth ground, and all immeasurable negative karma will be eliminated immediately. Anyone who wishes to be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss should diligently turn this prayer wheel, and the five uninterrupted sins can also be purified by this.

Guru Padmasambhava taught about the merits of the prayer wheel: when the prayer wheel is turned, the sound it makes can be heard by all living beings, living beings that touch the shadow, and all living beings that drink the water blessed by the mantra wheel and are touched by it, can remove their sins. 7. Master Bodhisattva said: The merit of turning a prayer wheel once is equivalent to reciting the Tripitaka once. Turning it twice is equivalent to reciting all the Buddhist sutras; turning it three times can eliminate the sins and obstacles of the body, speech, and mind; turning it ten times can eliminate the sins and obstacles like the king of Mount Sumeru; turning it a hundred times, the merits and virtues are equal to Yama is the same as King Yama. 8. The Holy Merci Maitreya said: If you offer brocade robes to the deep prayer wheel, you will receive the retribution of good robes in the next five hundred lives. Making offerings to the deep prayer wheels will lead directly to the path to liberation. Offering the flower curtain will become the father of all sentient beings. The merit you accumulate is greater than the merit of chanting a hundred thousand or tens of millions of mantras. Gods and demons will pay their respects to you. You will dominate humanity, wealth and food. Everything about you will be meaningful, and even the sentient beings passing by your shadow will be saved from the lower realms. If you make various food offerings to the Six-syllable Great Ming Mantra Prayer Wheel, you will become the Thousand-spoke Wheel-turning Holy King and enjoy all your wishes. Finally, you will meet the Supreme Compassionate Master Guanyin. Practitioners with good fortune can show others the prayer wheel of the Six-syllable Great Ming Mantra, explain it, or pass on the teachings of this wheel, just like the teachings of the Buddha.

One of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas said: "The ultimate benefit gained by turning the Dharma Wheel is to purify the five uninterrupted sins, the ten unwholesome karma, and all the bad karma that caused people to fall into the lower three realms. People will travel from the Buddha's Pure Land to Another pure land. Once people are born in the lotus hearts of the pure land, the activities of all the Buddhas in the ten directions will expand to the ten directions."

Master Bangose ​​said: "The number of six-character mantras to turn the prayer wheel is one thousand times for the upper level, seven hundred times for the middle level, and one hundred and eight times for the lower level. If a spiritual master consecrates it and recites auspicious wishes, If you turn this prayer wheel day and night without stopping, it will be equivalent to the blessings of fasting for the number of monks who offer the paper; if you decorate this prayer wheel, it will also be equivalent to the number of six-character mantras. Victory over the three realms of gods, ghosts, and humans, gather Dharma wealth and food. Master Padmasambhava said: "Relying on the merits of turning the prayer wheel, you can achieve all the favorable conditions for practicing the law, eliminate all obstacles, diseases and harmful conditions, 360 kinds of diseases and obstacles, 800,000 kinds of demonic obstacles, two There are a thousand kinds of sudden demons, three hundred and sixty kinds of original demons, curses, unlucky hexagrams, nightmares, bad omens, serious disasters and all other negative karma."

 

13. Vajra, the secret master, said: "Turning this prayer wheel is more powerful than practicing the law of longevity a hundred times, contemplating the wheel of protection a hundred times, and doing the wheel of protection a hundred times."

 

14. Venerable Shariputra, who has the most wisdom, once asked the World Honored One to enlighten me: "World Honored One, how to mature good roots by turning a prayer wheel? Please teach me, the World Honored One, who has been liberated from the reincarnation of countless kalpas." The World Honored One gave this teaching: "Turning the prayer wheel. By turning the prayer wheel for a short period of time or during special festivals, or by turning the prayer wheel continuously like water in a stream in daily life, all sentient beings in the three realms can be liberated. Touch the prayer wheel with your hands. Or those who see the prayer wheel with their eyes will not fall into the lower realms. The merit of turning the prayer wheel with their hands can make the sentient beings in the sky, the earth, water, fire, wind, mountains, rocks, grass and trees, and forests all achieve Buddhahood. If If you turn the prayer wheel on the top of the mountain, you can achieve auspiciousness and perfection in the area where you live. If the yogi turns the prayer wheel, you can achieve good fortune for yourself and others. If the ascetic who observes the precepts and is pure, turns the prayer wheel, you can purify the sinful karma of breaking the oath. If the mantra turns the prayer wheel, the karmic obstacles can be eliminated to meet the deity. If the doctor turns the prayer wheel, the plague in the place where he lives will be eliminated and everyone will become a Buddha. If the king turns the prayer wheel, his subjects and family members can eliminate karma. If the officers and soldiers turn the prayer wheel, they will all be able to eliminate karma. , it can purify karma, eliminate bad luck, and increase the field of blessings. If the princess turns the prayer wheel, she can obtain perfect blessings and the country will prosper. If the officer turns the prayer wheel, his team and family members can eliminate karma.
